German born, but raised in Cape Town, my family has been involved in hospitality for as long as I recall owning and operating numerous well established restaurants.
Continuing in the family tradition, I opened my first restaurant in Knysna South Africa, on the peninsular. At this point my passion for wine really took off. Matching wines with food became an obsession. I began spending more time in an around my favourite vineyards, understanding more the proccess involved in wine making, the beauty and subtlety of handcrafted wines! This experience culminatined in the vision of my own wine selection.
Onwards to London to further develop my culinary skills, I worked for various establishments, the last being the Savoy Hotel on the Strand. The Lembacher Palais in Munich, Germany followed. Whilst in Europe I became aware of the lack of quality boutique South African wines available.
During this period I met Sophie working as a buyer for the big houses in Berlin. She was caught up as I was with the concept of bringing single vineyard wines with personality from SA to the UK and Europe – The dream became a reality resulting in our first Hof's handcrafted wine selection.
Thus began my journey back to South Africa where I contacted some old friends and acquaintances in the Cape ending in the Robertson Valley. This is where I met my winemakers and started a joint venture in creating some of the most unique wines the Valley has to offer.
